FRENCH POLYNESIA: TAHITI AND BORA BORA!

October 2023   $3000   215 miles
ROUTE:

Raiatea, Tahaa, Hua Hin, Fare, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Tupitupiti, Tahaa.

French Polynesia is 118 very different islands in terms of relief and nature, which are considered by many experienced and seasoned travelers to be a real paradise on Earth. And French Polynesia is an almost complete collection of advertising stamps from tourist brochures. “Endless white sand beaches?” In stock. “Crystal clear coastal waters?” But how! “Motley flocks of tropical fish?” Where do without them, darlings. “Large tropical greenery?” Well, you understand.

The coolest thing is that all of the above is true. Although no, the coolest thing is that we are going there with you! Of course, exploring all the islands of this archipelago can take half a lifetime, so we offer you a 10-day sea adventure, during which we will pay special attention to the main “diamonds” of Oceania – the islands of Tahiti, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine and Tahaa, where we will be able to feel like James Cook of our time – to be real pioneers, to touch a completely different life and culture, to study the peculiarities of local leisure and cuisine, to swim with sharks and rays in the perfectly clear waters of the Pacific Ocean.

LET’S MAKE DREAMS TOGETHER!

And yet – get ready to visit another planet! It’s no joke, the time difference is 13 time zones (compared to Kiev), a completely different cultural and mental heritage, traditions and customs, cuisine and nature … That is why the trip to French Polynesia will differ in time from the usual – instead of the usual yachting week of us looking forward to 10 days of heavenly delight! Well, have you flown?

P.S. AND YES, PREPARE THAT THE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION WILL PERIODICALLY MEET UNFAMILIAR WORDS AND CONCEPTS – DO NOT WORRY, WE WILL ACCLIMATIZE QUICKLY!)

Day 1.

This day begins our acquaintance with French Polynesia. We arrive in the capital of the island of Tahiti, Papeete, and make another flight – an internal flight from Papeete to the island of Raiatea, where our catamarans, Catana 55 and Catana 47, are waiting for us, which will become our floating hotel for the next decade. We get acquainted with the catamarans and the crew, listen to the briefing and go to the nearest supermarket for purchase. In the evening (around 17.00) we make our first crossing to the eastern part of Tahaa island. The transition takes several hours, but the first vivid impression is already ready – we are meeting the sunset in the endless Pacific Ocean!

In the evening we have dinner on the shore and get acquainted with the local cuisine and the peculiarities of its preparation – since ancient times, the islands had their own unique way of cooking. Outside the house, in the yard, they made an earthen oven (imu), where they cooked food on hot stones, wrapping it in banana leaves. Basically, it was vegetables and fruits or fish. This tradition still exists, and it does not matter where you are going to eat – in an expensive restaurant or a local fast food.

Day 2.

Early in the morning we need to prepare for the exit towards Hua Hin Island – the transition will take about 5-6 hours, so we suggest arriving by noon. Hua Hin are two islands in French Polynesia: Big Hua Hin (Nui) and Little Hua Hin (Iti). They are interconnected by a bridge, and protected from waves by coral reefs.

The locals call this place “mystical” and believe in the legend that Hua Hin appeared when one day the god Hiro hit this shore with his canoe, and thus Maroe Bay was formed. There really is something mystical in these places, these two islands still keep traces of the presence of ancient civilizations, and ancient beliefs are still alive among the indigenous population. These places are considered the most beautiful in French Polynesia. The reason for this is not only luxurious beaches and views of the bay and coral reefs. In these places, you can observe a unique optical illusion – the “green beam effect”. At the moment of sunset, the sunbeam is refracted in the atmosphere in such a strange way that for a short time (from 2 seconds to 5 minutes) it acquires an emerald hue.

We snorkel among coral reefs, hand feed stingrays and explore all the possible and impossible shades of the Pacific Ocean….

Day 3.

On this day, we invite everyone to go explore the island itself – Hua Hin is considered the most mysterious of all the Polynesian islands. Hua Hin is considered to be the largest archaeological center in the Polynesian Triangle. There are many untouched places on the island, so archeological excavations are constantly being carried out here. It was here that traces of the most ancient Polynesian cultures dating back to 800-900 AD were found. Near the village of Maeva, traces of ancient civilizations have been discovered, and to date, more than 200 such sites have been restored, including many marae. Marae is a sacred place of the pre-Christian Polynesians, which is a large stepped temple platforms.

Among other things – a black pearl farm, vanilla plantations, botanical gardens, “Shark Feeding Ceremony”, hand-feeding of ocean fish, rays and sharks … Tempting, isn’t it? We will spend the evening in the town of Fare, which is very similar to an old colonial town, immersed in lush greenery. Our catamarans, in the meantime, will move to this part of the island and will be waiting for us on board – well-fed, a little tired, already tanned, but still very hungry for Polynesian adventures!))

DAY 4.

In the morning we leave early again and return to Raiatea (the crossing will take about 6 hours). We will have to replenish our supplies and, of course, get to know the island better!

Raiatea, the second largest island in French Polynesia, is not as popular as Tahiti or Bora Bora, which makes it even more attractive for us – because no one will stop us from getting to know the delights of this wonderful place! Raiatea, or “sacred island”, is not in vain considered the birthplace of all Polynesian civilizations. Once upon a time, the Maori tribe lived on the land of Raiatea Island, then it was called Hawaiki (or Hawaii’Nui) and was the religious and cultural center of all ancient Polynesia. According to ancient legends, it was from this island that representatives of the Maori set off, who were considered first-class navigators and discovered many islands in the Pacific Ocean – from the Hawaiian Islands to New Zealand. Since that time, amazing archaeological and historical monuments have been preserved on Raiatea. Among them, for example, the ancient temple of Taputapuatea marae. It is dedicated to the god of war and is the most famous and largest marae (sacred site) in all of French Polynesia. Here, in the west of the island, there is another marae – Tainu. It was built as a small copy of Taputapuatea. The main temple consists of seven stone temples. As legends say, it was here that priests from all, even the most distant, Polynesian islands gathered and made sacrifices, it was here that the most important issues were always resolved. There are also many fragments of terraces, various ancient cult objects, tools, and weapons on the island. Most of them were found in the Aver and Khaapapara valleys.

In addition to viewing historical monuments, there are many other ways to spend your leisure time on Raiatea. For example, you can choose to cruise on the only navigable river, Faaroa. During it, you will get acquainted with the unique plants and animals that grow here and live in the coastal zone, for example, with the exotic tiare apetahi flower. This beautiful four-leaf white flower blooms only at dawn, and at the same time makes sounds similar to crackling. Many locals specially come here to spend the night in order to “hear” how the tiare apetakhi blooms. And having visited the market of the city of Uturoa, you will get the opportunity to buy both products (exotic fruits, seafood, local sweets), and all kinds of products of Polynesian craftsmen.

Day 5.

Again early morning crossing to Bora Bora, which will take about 7 hours. In general, we really want to be in the ocean as much as possible on this day and enjoy fantastic landscapes, fishing, snorkeling (and the places around Bora Bora are famous for this like no other in the world !!!), kayaking and other activities. In the evening we stop at the marina and go for a walk around the town of Vaitape. We are preparing that for the next 2 days we will explore the island of Bora Bora itself and choose which activities will suit your taste.

DAY 6.

The next 2 days we completely devote to the study of Bora Bora. The main wealth and the main attraction of Bora Bora is the magnificent nature, generously endowing the island with mountain peaks, overgrown with luxurious tropical greenery to the very tops, and a variety of beautiful flowering plants and delicious fruits, and a colorful, densely populated and fascinating underwater world. Local residents are proud of their island and welcome numerous guests, doing everything to acquaint them with every corner of Bora Bora.

The island offers many excursions, on foot, horseback or by jeep, along the coast or inland. Everyone can see the strange temples of the Marae, which are still revered by the indigenous Polynesians, and the village of Faantui, which once served as the residence of local leaders. You can also turn your attention to the ruins of the American naval base, left over from the war with Japan, as a reminder of perhaps the most tragic days in the history of the island.

Day 7.

Thematic picnics are held on one of the motus, where young Polynesians and Polynesians will talk about the tricks of tying a pareo or breaking coconuts, tell about the secrets and customs of the indigenous people of the island, about which of the local plants can be eaten and how to cook them, and much more interesting little things. In the southwestern part of the island there is a real “Coral Garden”, where, under the guidance of an instructor, you can dive to the bottom of the lagoon to see the splendor of the underwater world with your own eyes.

In the town of Tupitupiti, scuba diving will be especially interesting, it is here that barracuda, tuna and big shark are most often found. The most adventurous scuba divers can even feed these predators, and huge, but benevolent stingrays will not refuse treats. The apotheosis of the excursion program can be a helicopter ride around Bora Bora to see the breathtaking magnificent panorama of the island.

Day 8.

Still being impressed by the unprecedented beauties and landscapes of Bora Bora, we still leave ourselves hope that there is at least something left in this world that can surprise us!))) And we will not lose, we straighten the sails and set off further on our way – towards the island of Tahaa. We enjoy nature, sun, ocean, fishing and swimming. In the evening we come to the island and have dinner on the shore.

Day 9.

This day we dedicate to the study of the island of Tahaa – the “vanilla island” of French Polynesia.

Among the historical monuments of Tahaa there are several well-preserved marae, ancient temples of the Polynesians, three of them are located on the shores of Vaimai Bay, five more are in Mao Bay. In one of the marae, an ahu, a ceremonial platform, has been perfectly preserved. There are only three settlements on Tahaa, scattered along its different banks. Fishing is excellent in the coastal waters of Tahaa, usually fishing from a boat, but if you wish, you can try your hand at underwater fishing. As soon as you step on the coast of Tahaa, you will immediately understand why it was called “vanilla island”, the delicate aroma of this spice spreads far beyond the vast plantations that occupy most of the island. The smell of vanilla permeating the air of the island makes Tahaa even more romantic and gives a special poignancy to your senses. Vanilla plantations will be shown to everyone who is interested, and they will be told in detail about how trees are grown, how vanilla is pollinated and ripened. In addition to selling vanilla, the locals make money by selling unique black pearls, which are grown on several farms. Black pearls of Tahaa Island are known to jewelers and lovers of precious jewelry all over the world, because they are of the highest quality. Here, on one of the farms, you will be taught how to evaluate the quality of pearls, they will tell you the legends and lyrical stories dedicated to it, and you will also be offered to purchase a string of amazingly beautiful pearls. The pride and object of special concern of the islanders is the “turtle reserve”. In it, under the care of people who are passionate about their work, many turtles spend their days in prosperity, some of them belong to unique and rare species, while others can boast of a very advanced age.

DAY 10.

We continue to explore the island of Tahaa and focus on its main asset – snow-white beaches and the cleanest, gentle waters of the lagoon. You can indulge in a serene pastime, basking in the sun on the beach and swimming in the azure water, you can endlessly. On local beaches there is no crush of large resorts and tightly closed private estates on the coast. And in this freedom and some wildness there is a special charm. The life of both the indigenous islanders and the tourists who come to Tahaa flows slowly, measuredly, as if everyone, getting here, receives a secret knowledge that life and beauty are eternal, and after one happily lived day, the next, even happier, will surely come.

In the evening we return to our home marina on the island of Raiatea.

DAY 11.

In the morning we still have to say goodbye to our catamarans and get ready for a long flight home. But we are firmly convinced that the impressions that we experienced will forever remain with us one of the most vivid adventures in life!
